Study continues on flooding reduction

On Sept. 7, city leaders continued addressing the recurring flooding in downtown Excelsior Springs. That evening, they met at the Excelsior Springs Community Center for a workshop meeting about the Fishing River Watershed Study the city is helping to put together. Laurie Brown, project manager, began the meeting with an overview of specific flooding issues. Excelsior Springs has “chronic flooding downtown, stream bank instability, inadequate bridge and culvert openings, highly constrained floodplains, overland flooding from adjacent hillsides; and … the flooding is threatening to life, property and infrastructure,” Brown said. The next general topic, reducing flood damage, covered such items as voluntary residential floodplain buyouts, creating the Fishing River Linear Park Trail, bridge improvements and replacements, and goals of the study.
