Depth a strength for Tigers in boys and girls track and field
Excelsior Springs track and field coach Jonah Albertson probably won’t have problems filling events this spring.
At press time, Albertson had a 100-person roster of boys and girls – the largest turnout in program history. That total includes 28 returning letterwinners.
“We have the potential to earn points both on the track and in the field events,” Albertson said. “We are young, with 65 freshmen and sophomores, but our 13 seniors have really stepped up to be leaders for the team so far.”
The goal for the large den of Tigers is to continue emphasizing “personal records from week to week and aim to peak in mid-May to set us up for our best chance to qualify for the state meet,” Albertson said.
Three Tigers are looking to make repeat appearances at state: Braxton Moffett, Mason Wartner and Kolt Willis. Moffett, a senior, enters his final high school season looking to top himself in the pole vault. He cleared 3.51 meters at the state meet last season.
