Excelsior Springs controlled the possession when the Tigers hosted St. Joseph Central Oct. 6 in varsity 11-man football. St. Joe Central, however, controlled the scoreboard, downing Excelsior Springs 42-12. The Tigers (0-7) had the football for twice as long as St. Joe Central (6-1). But the Indians showed they could strike quickly. After stopping the Tigers on the opening possession, St. Joe Central drove 76 yards in four plays to take a 7-0 lead. A six-play, 60-yard scoring drive, capped by a touchdown and Luke Catherall’s extrapoint kick, made it 14-0. The Tigers threatened to halve the margin by staging a 15-play drive that featured 13 rushes by junior Dawson Claypole, but a fumble at the St. Joe Central 2-yard line was picked up and returned 98 yards for a touchdown.
