ES eyes third-place finish at state

By the time you read this, Excelsior Springs will have placed third or fourth at state in baseball. At press time, the Tigers were preparing to play Fulton for third place in the Class 4 state tournament Thursday at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark. A 3-2 loss in eight innings to Springfield Catholic Wednesday night, also at Sky Bacon, set up the meeting with the Hornets, who lost 5-1 to John Burroughs in Wednesday’s other semifinal. This marks Excelsior Springs’ fifth topfour finish. The Tigers finished in the top four three times as a Class 3A program, placing fourth in 1995, third in 1996 and fourth again in 1999, MSHSAA records state. They placed third in Class 4 in 2018. “We’re excited,” Colson Moore said. “I think we deserve to be down there with all those (final four) teams. I think we’re just as good as anybody that we’re going to be playing against.” Moore, who graduated last month, made his comments on May 25 after pitching the Tigers to a 7-2 victory over Boonville at Harley…
