The sophomore class might have an influence on how Excelsior Springs fares this school year in varsity girls sports. Willa Schreier, a two-sport athlete, is among those sophomores who might wield some influence, particularly in softball. Schreier is a returning starter in softball. And like her first year of high school, she expects to play girls basketball as a sophomore. Of the two sports, softball is Schreier’s favorite, she said. “Softball has always been my main focus since I was little and it has built my athletic foundation,” she said. Schreier also appreciates softball because it has brought her together with some of her favorite people. Through the sport, she has found best friends she has relied on, she said. Competing for Excelsior Springs has allowed her to create bonds with her schoolmates that she couldn’t have created otherwise, she said.
