33 Miles to peform this fall

This year’s Crescent Lake Christian Center Concert Series is in full swing this year, announcing their upcoming concert, which is just a little over a month away.
The Christian band 33 Miles will be performing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Excelsior Springs Performing Arts Center with performances by Chris and Conrad and JJ Heller.
The band’s visit to Excelsior Springs is part of their Today Tour, which promotes the release of their upcoming album titled “Today,” which goes on sale Oct. 5.
The concert is sponsored by 97.3 K Love, 91.9 Air 1, the Excelsior Springs Standard/Town & Country Leader, Walmart and Dari-B.
Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the gate and $20 Gold Circle. Tickets can be purchased at www.itickets.com, Family Christian stores in Independence, Lifeway Christian stores in Olathe and Tiffany Springs, Christian Bookshelf in Lee’s Summit, Mardel Christian and Supplies in Overland Park and Independence and at the Crescent Lake Christian Center.
Tickets can be purchased over the phone at the center from 9:30 a.m.- 1p.m. during office hours.
The last Crescent Lake concert at the PAC, Big Daddy Weave, sold out 10 days prior to the concert, seating 850 people.
Therefore, the Crescent Lake Concert Series encourages those planning to attend to purchase tickets early.
The concert series has brought Christian Bands such as Jars of Clay, Thousand Foot Krutch, Big Daddy Weave and Seventh Day Slumber.

Journalist to speak at Elms, part of annual Dog Retreat

Noted journalist, author of several books and nationally syndicated columnist Charles Gusewelle will be speaking at the Elms Resort and Spa next weekend as part of the annual Dog Retreat.
The third annual retreat, a fundraising event for the Excelsior Springs Friends of Animals, begins Friday, Sept. 10 and ends Sunday, Sept. 12.
Gusewelle will speak at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the Regent Ballroom at the Elms.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
Gusewelle has written for The Kansas City Star for more than 50 years.
Starting out as a general assignment reporter, he has held various positions at the newspaper including foreign affairs editor, associate editor and columnist.
Throughout his career Gusewelle has received several literary awards and his articles have appeared in Harper’s American Heritage, The Paris Review and many others.
Gusewelle talents don’t just include his literary work. He has helped create several documentary films including “This Place Called Home,” which won a regional Emmy.
He was the American Leader of the 1991 joint U.S.-Russian 2,700 mile expedition from the source to the mouth of the Lena River in Siberia. The trip was the subject of his book and film, “A Great Book Running.”
An avid animal lover, Gusewelle wrote “The Rufus Chronicles: Another Autumn” and “Another Cat at the Door.”
Book signing will take place after Gusewelle’s presentation. His books will be available for purchase at the retreat.
Also new to this year’s retreat is the Race to the Rescue, 5K run and one-mile walk.
Entry fees are $25, $5 for children ages 5 through 12.
The 5K run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11. Dogs are welcome to participate as long as they are on leashes.
Proceeds will benefit the ESFOA pet rescue animal care and spay/neuter funds.
Other events include a movie shown on the back lawn of the Elms as part of the Movies on the Lawn series on Friday, a pet expo on Saturday and a pancake breakfast on Sunday.
The Bark for the Arts benefit art show will be during the pet expo with Erin Pech, Aundrea Anderson, Ali Voepel, Alyssa Frazier, Hearts Full of Hope, 4 Paws Pet Arts and Kellie McCue as featured artists.
There will also be free seminars during the pet expo, agility demonstrations, dog shows and contests, pet photography, children’s activities, a raffle and door prizes.

KC Wolf, Busby to visit library for programs

KC Wolf and Brian Busby are some of the local celebrities that will be at the Excelsior Springs Mid-Continent Public Library in September.
“What Will Happen Today? Weather in the Midwest with Bryan Busby” will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23. The program will be for ages 10 and up.
Busby will discuss what goes into a forecast, what makes it change and how to prepare for all circumstances.
“KC Wolf presents Read to Succeed” will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30. All ages are encouraged to attend.
Others include the adult programs “Foundations of Investing,” which will look at the key features of bonds, stocks and mutual funds, asset allocation and the impact of inflation.
The classes will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
Or “Create a New Look for Your Home,” with Lisa Holiman, decorating consultant, showing how to use items throughout the home to enhance it.
The class will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 27.
The science program “Crime Lab: To Catch a Thief” will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
Children ages 6 and up are encouraged.

Searching local history?

The Excelsior Springs Standard receives many requests for information from past issues. The news staff is not able to do research for individuals, however, the Excelsior Springs Historical Museum has an extensive collection of newspapers and newspaper clippings for local research. The Museum is located at 101 E. Broadway in the old Clay County State Bank building. For the cost of a $10.00 membership, persons can use the archives for their research needs.
