Carrie Ferriss, a local mother of two children, has been organizing local fundraising campaigns since March 2023 to secure a service dog for her son John Jr. Ferriss (8), also known as, “Captain Can’t Sit Still of the SS Make or Break for It.” John Jr., according to his mother Carrie, undergoes challenges as he navigates life with Down Syndrome. Carrie explained that he struggles with elopement issues and will periodically walk out of their home without any regard for his safety - he has even escaped the classroom at school. “In March, he managed to get out of our house at three in the morning,” Carrie said. “My sister saw him Children with autism may find it hard to cope with certain everyday situations and may elope to get away from stresses.
