Transportation safety matters to ES school district
Excelsior Springs First Student Transportation Director Kim Green and Safety and Security Director Jeff Kimsey make it their mission to keep Excelsior Springs students safe on and off the bus.
Green described each bus in the district transporting between 40 to 60 students at a time and said, “Buses are full, weighing 15 tons fully loaded.”
She pointed out that policies, such as staying out of the danger zone, being aware of the surroundings, not eating or drinking and reducing horseplay, can keep students safe.
“Students must know about the danger zone,” Green said. “The danger zone extends around the entire bus 10 feet, and students should never walk behind a bus, as drivers cannot see. It is the No. 1 blind spot.”
Students are instructed never to chase a bus. If a student drops something, they are to let the item remain where it is while waiting for the bus to leave. Once the area is clear of traffic, the students can pick up what they have dropped.
