Collins a champion at Platte County wrestling tourney
Cooper Collins was the top dog – or rather, Tiger – for Excelsior Springs at the 51st Platte County Invitational.
The first-year high schooler went 7-0 at the boys wrestling tournament, held Jan. 20-21 at Platte County High School, to win the 113-pound title. Five wins were by fall.
Collins was among five top-five finishers for Excelsior Springs. Sophomore Ryne Marcum placed third at 132, going 6-2. Gaige Carr, a first-year high schooler, took fourth at 138 by going 4-3. Lane Crowley also finished fourth, going 5-3 at 215. Hunter Scoma placed fifth at 157.
The appearance at Platte County followed a 57-22 Jan. 18 road win over Grandview. Sophomore Wyett Shipman started the dual with a win at 106 over Erick Arcos by pin.
Collins built an 8-3 lead over Josiah McNeal at 113 before picking up a win by fall in 1 minute, 35 seconds. Sophomore
