ES gets first varsity girls tennis dual victory
Excelsior Springs’ losing streak in varsity girls tennis duals continued last week.
And then, it suddenly ended. On Sept. 12, the Tigers fell 8-1 to visiting Benton of St. Joseph – their sixth straight defeat. In doubles, junior Shelby Stodden and Malaya Tedesco dropped the No. 1 match 8-4. Laney Smith, a firstyear high schooler; and Megan Riegel, a junior, lost the No. 2 match 8-4. Junior Rebecca McDade and first-year high schooler Olivia Deere lost 8-3 in the third spot.
Singles results included an 8-3 loss by Stodden, an 8-0 loss by Smith, an 8-5 win by Riegel, an 8-4 loss by McDade and an 8-3 loss by Deere. The Tigers also dropped one match by medical forfeit.
The Tigers ended their losing skid Sept. 14 at Grandview by crushing the Bulldogs 9-0. In doubles, Stodden and Tedesco took the No. 1 match 8-3, Smith and Riegel cruised 8-0, and McDade and Deere won 8-3.
